Domain WhoIs Database

According to ICANN, all domains must be listed in the WhoIs Database. This database is a compilation of all registered domains on the Internet. There are actually several WhoIs databases. Some are all-inclusive collections of registered domain names. Others are only specific to the registrar. For example, if you visit a registrar that only carries a few of the top-level domains, that company’s WhoIs directory will only show the domains it has registered. The WhoIs directory is more than just a list of domain names, however. It also has the contact and technical information for each registered domain. This information includes everything from who registered the domain to the DNS codes it uses.

ICANN felt that it was important for domain information to be publicly listed in the WhoIs database for several reasons. This information makes it easy for law enforcement to investigate any unlawful Internet activity related to a specific domain. Registrars use the directory to confirm and validate domain transfer requests. Intellectual property owners can contact domain registrants if their intellectual property is illegally used by the registrant. Potential domain name buyers can see when a domain name is going to expire so that they may purchase it.

If you do not want your personal information to be published along with domain information in the WhoIs directory, opt for private registration. All domain information will still be available, but a registrant will assign alternate contact information to your listing. This will keep people from having direct access to your personal information.
