UsedAirplanes, Inc. buys Flying.com for $1.1 million

April 8, 2010 – A company called UsedAirplanes, Inc. has purchased the domain name Flying.com for $1.1 million. They plan on using the domain to set up a dedicated website showcasing all of their used aircrafts and airplanes that are for sale on their flagship site UsedAirplanes.com.

A company spokesperson said that a new beta version of Flying.com will be up in June 2010. According to the placeholder page that is on the domain as of today, Flying.com will be “the first community and social media based portal for flying”.

The domain Flying.com, originally registered in 1994, was sold by BuyDomains for $845,000 to undisclosed private investors in 2009. The CEO of UsedAirplanes, Mark J. Horn, has been trying to purchase the domain since then and finally closed the transaction last week. The company had been given use of the name before the purchase.

IdeaLab sells domain Top10.com for $1 million in cash and equity

April 3, 2010 -- Idealab, an online business incubator, sold the domain name Top10.com for $200,000 in cash and a 7% equity share in the UK’s new Top10.com Media Ltd. Founder of IdeaLab and the person behind the sale, Bill Gross, will join the advisory board of the company.

Top10.com was purchased by the same team involved in Top 10 Broadband and Top 10 Mobile, both price comparison sites targeting the UK market. Prior to the rebranding under the Top10.com umbrella, the company’s two sites attracted 1.5 million UK users a month. The company, founded in 2006, also owns Top10.co.uk.

Bill Gross, the founder of IdeaLab, and the success behind many technology companies including Picasa and GoTo.com, will sit on the advisory board at Top10.com. The cash and equity deal is valued at over $1 million – one of the most expensive domain purchases by a UK company.

FourSquare.com forgets to renew domain name

March 27, 2010 -- Internet startup FourSquare.com had an interesting fiasco on their hands yesterday – a Godaddy.com parked page on their website. The location based social networking site forgot to renew its domain name.

Apparently, someone at the company either didn’t heed the renewal notices, or didn’t keep a credit card on file, and when the domain expired on March 25th, registrar Godaddy.com implemented their standard parked page– whoops.
